Newborn with thrush... Nystatin?
My one-month-old daughter, was diagnosed with thrush, two days ago, and was prescribed Nystatin. She was taken to Urgent Care, since she couldn't get in with her pediatrician, for a good while. The doc didn't write down how long to take it! I didn't notice, 'til after we left, and they are hard to get ahold of. It just says to take it until 48 hours, after symptoms resolve... Well, I couldn't even see the white patches, until he used a penlight and tongue depressor, so how am I supposed to know when it's getting better? It seems to be a very mild case. (I was told to use Lotrimin on my nipples, since I'm breastfeeding her.) She hates the stuff, and gags on it; I hate giving it to her... I've read that some people just swab it in her mouth, instead of squirting it, so baby doesn't have to swallow it... Is that good enough? Also, I've read about alternative treatments, such as Grapeseed Extract... Does this really work, and if so, what is the usual treatment? I'm still going to try to get in touch with the docs, but I figured someone on here has dealt with this, before, and could help... Thanks!

- OMG my son has thrush too which I didnt even know. He was prescribed Nystatin also. Although he doesnt seem to mind the taste, I would rather he not swallow it. My sons pediatrician and the pharmacist told me to squirt it on the side of his cheeks and keep giving it to him for 14 days. Hope that helps!! I havent seen my doc yet, so I dont know what to use on my nipples as I am breastfeeding also.
- Both of my girls had thrush and where prescribed the exact same gunk. Try mixing it with a bit of formula and feeding it to them off of a spoon. And if that doesnt work you need a dosing syringe so you can just get it in them and done with. I was told take for 1 week, but that could just have been for my girls as their cases where bad but not sever like some kids have had. As for grapeseed extract you need to speak with your Doc first as Ive heard both good and very bad about using it. They never went in to detail about it but my Dad whos and RN says bad idea usually hes right. If you cant get in touch with your own pediatrician speak with one of the nurses to see if another Family practice/peds doc can assist til you talk to your own. Good luck I was a wreck while my girls had thrush I felt so bad for gicing them that medicine I about cried. Hugs and best wishes for a fast recovery to your lil one.
- My son had thrush at 10 weeks. I swabbed the medicine on with a q-tip 4 times a day for 5 days.
- If you want to get rid of the thrush in 2 days, use Gentian Violet. It's $1.99 at Walgreen's (ask the pharmacist). My youngest and I had the thrush when she was about 6 weeks old. We were both prescribed Nystatin, it was useless because we just kept passing the thrush back and forth to each other. Here is a very helpful link- http://www.kellymom.com/newman/06gentian_violet.html
