Tongue Thrush

5 week old baby...thrush?

My little man is 5 weeks old today. I took him to get a blood test today and the nurse said she thought he had thrush. I took him straight to the Dr and he said he did have thrush and prescribed some oral drops. Does anyone know how long it takes for the thrush to clear up? I feel awful because I didn't know (I thought it was milk on his tongue) and had stopped breastfeeding him because it was agony on my nipples-I assume this is due to the thrush? Any advice would be great.

  1. my son had thrush when he was a newborn. the length of time he has it for can vary but most of the time with the oral drops it should be gone in a week or 2. and yes thrush can cause breastfeeding to be extremely painful. just keep giving him his drops and go back to doc in about a week or 2 to get him checked out to see if its gone properly.
  2. Hi, my son had thrush about the same age as your baby and I was also given drops for it. I was lucky and it cleared up in a couple of days although i did use the drops for as long as was prescribed. And don't feel guilty, it happens loads with newborns. Good luck and take care. x
