Tongue Thrush

thrush on baby tongue?

I have a 5 week old baby girl and she have thrush on her tongue only. The doctor gave me some medicine called nystatin to give her four times a day. So I went on line and pulled it up and it said that you and baby can pass it back and forth to each other if your breastfeeding and that i am. It also said if your having burning and pain in you breast you might have the thrush in your breast duds and i think i have it. My doctor didn't tell me that it could spread to my breast. If anyone out there experience this problem let me know what happened and what you did to solve the problem.

  1. Stop sticking your willy in there.
  2. yeah its an abnormal reaction of the immune system....just wash your nipples after feeding and keep informing your doctor !!!
  3. You need to call the DR in the morning and tell him that you need something also for your breast to prevent the passing back and forth. My first child had thrush but not breastfeeding but I know the Dr will give you something also. I breast feed two other children since.
  4. i believe this is a very common problem. it happened to me and my son when he was about 2 weeks old. When you put the medicine in your daughters mouth also put some on your breasts. Should take care of it all in about 2 weeks! **Its the same medicine that they will tell you to apply to your breasts.
  5. I had the same thing when I was breastfeeding and I was given the same medicine for my daughter too. I also got thrush in my breast from feeding her. Just make sure you wash it and dry before and after each feed, if it is causing you concern speak to your doctor and I think he can prescribe you the same medicine.
  6. Wash your bras in hot water, you should both get prescriptions (Nystatin cream for your nipples and Nystatin or Gentian Violet liquid for baby), sterilize bottles/toys/pacifiers after every use, rotate pacifiers frequently throughout the day. My son was on Nystatin for 2 weeks and ended up going on the Gentian Violet to clear it up.
  7. Yes it happened to me twice with both of my babies. And yes you are right Nystatin is the most popular medicine for this. You should get the NYSTATIN cream for yourself and put it on your nipples. I did the same. My doctor told me to do this. You don't even need prescription for this cream. It is available in the pharmacies. Ask your pharmacist about this and yes please do start it on your breast 3 times a day. Otherwise your baby won't get cure properly. After 3 4 days stop doing it and it take 2 days for the thrush to disappear..
  8. My son and daughter both had thrush and they both gave it to me. Nystatin is a very large percentage sugar, and that is what thrush feeds on. So a lot of times it doesn't work. It didn't work for us and we kept passing it back and forth. What worked for us was grapefruit seed extract. You get it at the health food store. You put 10 drops into 1oz of clean water and mix it, then put onto your nipples after every feed or every 2 hours and swab the inside of baby's mouth with it at the same time. It will clear it up very quickly, but continue for 24 hours after it is gone to make sure it is all gone. And wash all your nursing bras in hot water, and anything else that comes into contact with baby's mouth or your nipples.
  9. You need to apply the medication to your breasts as well as to your daughters mouth. Thrush is like a yeast infection of the mouth and can easily be passed between you and your daughter. Just like a vaginal yeast infection can be passed to your partner. So make sure you and baby are both being treated. Its very common so dont worry.
  10. that just happened recently to me. So He had thrush, got nystatin, put it on my nipples as well as his mouth. Went away, came back, got another prescription, went away came back. Got Acidophiles from the health food store, which my lactation consultant lady recommended. I took one more than the recommended amount, and opened the capsule and swabbed it around my baby's mouth 2 times a day. Went away and hasn't came back in a month. Good luck, and its annoying isn't it???
