Tongue Thrush

3 week old baby has thrush on her tongue?

Ped. told me my 3 week old has thrush on her tongue, could it be that this is why she is uncomfortable most of the time and always trying to eat, she never seems full, the ped. told me its cuz her tongue is itchy and she feels relief when the bottle nipple is in her mouth, but this is causing her to over feed. Also what could have caused this? is it true that it could be from her sterilizer machine I use to boil the bottles and nipples?

  1. at 3 weeks its most likely from her hormones. It takes about 3-4 weeks for your hormones to flush out of her system, a lot of babies get thrush or the runs during this time. It can also be caused from improperly sterilized bottles and equipment. Or it can just be cause by the formula she's on. But generally at this age, if you're being clean and sterile, its from the hormones changing.
  2. I was told that it's from not wiping her mouth out after she eats. Everyone in my family was telling me to wipe the milk out her mouth..But then my doctor was saying 'that's not really necessary'. And sure enough a month later I was back at the Doc's getting medicine for it.
  3. thrush is a yeast infection, plain and simple. yeast lives on us and in us. when it gets out of balance (for whatever reason), we end up with yeast infections in adults, thrush in babies. yes, improper sterilizing can do it - which is why i am so happy i breastfed. even though my youngest still got thrush once, it was nothing at all to fix it. i used gentian violet and it was cleared up within hours: http://www.drjacknewman.com/help/Gentian%20Violet.asp
  4. The Health visitor always thought my daughter had oral thrush when she was very young. she was exclusively breastfed and it turns out it was just the milk residue on her tongue which looked like thrush, but i had to prove this to the Doctor and i was right. Also newborns typically want to suck all the time, i spent most of my time breastfeeding my daughter when she was newborn, and most other babies i know are the same. Does your little one take a dummy (pacifier)? i know that some people don't like them but they can be a godsend, my daughter never liked them but yours might.
  5. I thought my son had thrush, 1 ped confirmed and another disagreed. After weeks of worry and research and medicine that didn't work to clear up the white, and 2 dr's, my son did not have thrush. My guess is he's wrong. Thrush is not truly that common and it hurts when they eat. They start to suckle and then stop and cry. Try this test: take a cotton swab and rub/scrape it over her tongue. The white will most likely come off. If it won't come off then maybe it is thrush. But I wouldn't take the doc's word for it.
  6. no not from sterilizer it could be from anything even from you kissing her on the mouth my son had it in his mouth the doctor should of gave you some meds to put on it which will help it will feel itchy for a while i used a dummy to help with it
