Does my 1 week old have Thrush?
I'm currently breastfeeding my newborn (he's a week and a half old) but also supplementing with formula -- My Mom mentioned to me today that she suspects he has thrush because his tongue looks white - this never occurred to me because I just assumed it was milk left on his tongue... do your babies have white-ish tongues because of milk? Becaue I'm feeding him every 3 hours - I assumed the white never really had time to go away...? HELP!

- If you are breastfeeding and your baby has thrush, you would probably know because it usually spreads to the nipples. When my son had thrush I also got it and was in a lot of pain because of it. It's sometimes hard to tell just by looking though. If the white is just on his tongue, it may not be, but if there are white patches on the insides of his mouth and lips then it probably is. You might want to take him to the doctor's just to be safe.
- i would take him to the pediatrician. that sounds very much like thrush... white patches on the tounge and in the mouth. its nothing too big to worry about just take him... they will paint his mouth with this colored medicine and that should make it go away.
- Thrush is usually spots that are raised on the tongue, they are kind of bumpy. On the insides of the mouth it appears more flat and shiny. And I know you didn't ask but if you plan on succeeding at breastfeeding you need to be nursing at least every two hours during the day, every 3 hours is not enough for many breastfeeding pairs -baby will not get enough and during the first 6 weeks is when the prolactin receptors develop -if there isn't enough demand it can cause continued problems throughout the entire time you breastfeed. ----- Thrush Resources ... more than you ever wanted to know about thrush http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/thrush/thrush-resources.html Some pics: http://images.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http://www.mydochub.com/images/oral_thrush.jpg&imgrefurl=http://mydochub.com/blog/index.php/2007/08/16/&usg=__3R6Bsse58XqxuRhUT1WYaJTU1uo=&h=271&w=400&sz=27&hl=en&start=2&sig2=0vBuJ31HXkU55baW8AjkTQ&tbnid=7PF4lXC00ng3qM:&tbnh=84&tbnw=124&ei=Qp81ScCrI6XCefrcjPoH&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dthrush%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DG http://images.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http://www.christinas-home-remedies.com/image-files/yeast-oral-thrush.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.christinas-home-remedies.com/yeast-infection-symptom.html&usg=__wvCija1eUN60ar3Od3PmjGSl5yo=&h=289&w=500&sz=34&hl=en&start=4&sig2=jU5ETHc9DwviRNMS_D25ZA&tbnid=xWkQhc1cBrYfBM:&tbnh=75&tbnw=130&ei=YJ81ScfAFIz8eeHmpIgI&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dthrush%2Boral%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DG http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/6/6f/Oralcandi.JPG/280px-Oralcandi.JPG
